How does our service work?

Bumpy road, noisy driving

Different road surfaces produce different sounds as you drive, with poor surfaces producing more noise than good ones. If the road surface is especially uneven, you can feel the vibrations from the tires as well. This noise and vibration is caused by defects in the texture of the road surface, such as cracks, fraying or potholes, and by the waviness of the road. These are signs of road degradation, requiring maintenance.

Sensor unit

An Internet-of-Things approach

Our technology uses onboard tire-road noise and vibration sensor units, installed in the vehicle trunk close to one of the rear wheel arches, to analyze these sounds and vibrations. Units are installed in ordinary vehicles so they can effortlessly map the state of road surfaces as they drive. Features describing the state of the road surface are securely sent to the cloud for further processing.

Big data analytics

Intelligent algorithms are used to remove the influence of factors such as the temperature, the speed and acceleration of vehicles or their noise insulation. Finally, the information collected by multiple vehicles is mapped to road segments, resulting in maps of road surface state (texture and waviness), such as the one shown here. As vehicles circulate, these maps are continuously updated.
